Rhode Island’s longest-running sketch-comedy showcase, the Empire Revue picks apart a new theme each month with original sketches and songs darting hilariously between pithy and poignant, lofty and low-brow, satirical and generous, warm and idiotic.
Amplified by a live house band and palate-cleansed by a handful of guest artists (comedians, musicians, dancers, and whatevers), each show’s inviting energy builds to a curated explosion of performance.
Since 2006, Keith Munslow has directed the Empire Revue, led its house band, and assembled its wildly creative ensemble of writer/performers. The process has rolled continuously ever since: start with a theme, write a bunch of material, rehearse it into shape, perform it the first Sunday of the month – and repeat. Some 150 shows, thousands of sketches, and several hundred songs later, it’s a finely oiled contraption that periodically breaks from routine to write and perform full-length musical plays, including the 2018-19 smash hit “Benny’s: The Musical.”
The Empire Revue takes place the first Sunday of every month* at 7pm, AS220’s Mainstage in Providence, RI.
